The Royal Theater was rebuilt on the same site as the old building, being a historical follow-up of the first. The main targets of the study were: 1.To preserve the idea of the old building, “updated” in the reconstructed building.
2. To reinstate actively and dynamically, but not showily, the theater in the city life, as a building already being a carrier of the city’s theatrical history.
The building is deployed on nine levels, with a total area of 11,000m2. The stage, with dimensions 25.0x18.0m and an opening of 16.0x7.0m serves all kinds of shows. The hall has a capacity of 800 people, good visibility from all seats, and perfect acoustic conditions.
A large part of the building lays under the water table, therefore, to make possible the construction of the bearing structure, barrier walls had to be constructed, 28.0m deep. In order to balance the great lifting forces, the foundation had to be fitted with ballast. Strict Acoustics specifications imposed everywhere floating floors, sound absorbing roofs and, sometimes, floating walls. A special solution was adopted to cover the curved roof, using a double cell structure. The aim when planning the electromechanical installations was low noise level. Given that the acoustics of a space depends on its geometry, there was a consequent approach of the final geometry, processing the forms with a specialized computer program. Before the final form was adopted, a series of architectural models were made, for the aesthetic, technical and acoustic solution of the room’s roof, along with a large number of acoustic approaches.

The surrounding landscape was also upgraded aesthetically.
